Two Odd Stats

by Schards#2 » 19 Oct 2009 10:32

1. If it were not for barnsley away, our second half For/Against would be 0-13.

2. If it were not for barnsley away, we would not have scored a single goal this after after conceding one.

Both these stats, for me, point to a poor manager who can't instill the confidence in his team to withstand a set back and gets out thought at half time by smarter opposition managers.

It's hard to believe most managers couldn't get more out of this, admittedly, poor squad.

Nothing quite like writing something out of history to suit your point.

Could just as easily say "if we'd scored our chances against Doncaster/Cardiff/Forest then we'd be 6-13.

Can't say i've checked against other teams records, but it strikes me as a very unusual sequence that demonstrates a trend that shows no sign of being addressed or corrected.

They are pretty unusual even inclusive of the Barnsley result, its elimination just highlights it further.

I think there was one season under Pardew where we finished with a dismal points tally in games in which we fell behind. Under Coppell I think our record coming from behind was quite impressive.

It's pretty clear, even without the stats, that Rogers at the moment has few answers when the team is a goal behind, or facing different tactics, or whatever, the stats simply back this up.

It's got to the point where my heart sank when Mills scored. Pre-match, the best I'd hoped for was 0-0. It was obvious when we scored that collectively we wouldn't be able to cope with West Brom's reaction. If we can't handle Peterborough coming at us with all guns blazing, what chance against probably the best team in the division? Mentally we are extraordinarily weak. A pushover in fact.

Cheers, interesting that QPR have a huge 1st half bias too.

It sounded like we did exactly the same against West Brom as Watford, the difference being West Brom have good attackers.

Played fairly well in the first 20 odd minutes and got ahead. Then decided to try and hold on. But without, you know, trying to keep hold of the ball really. It's the "we can't cross the half way line in case we get hit on the break and lose the lead" syndrome.

It's not too bad first half, but after the other team has had a rocket at half time we sit there timidly hopeing we can weather the storm for the first 10 minutes. Of course that completely surrenders the initiative and invites teams to get on top. From that point it's impossible for a team in poor form and confidence to get back into the game.

If we do go a goal or two up we panic and try to hold on to the lead, not kill the game off. The players are terrified of losing and are going about not losing in all the wrong ways. That is poor management, plain and simple. The very fact that we are just about out playing even some of the best teams in the league for part of the game shows we have what it takes to be fine.

Remember when we went almost 3 seasons winning every single game we were ahead at half time?

These stats can be used as further proof at the squads lack of strength and fitness this season.

On Saturday WBA continually muscled our players off the ball. With an hour of the game gone Kebe and Jem both looked exhausted. Not to mention the appearance of a visibly overweight Shane Long from the subs bench.

Or leading given there is at least 4 games this season already where we've failed to win when taking the lead.

In 5 games where we've scored first we've won 1, drawn 1 and lost 3.

In 4 games where we've conceeded first we've won 1, drawn 0 and lost 3. That win came against a team that then sacked their manager and have picked up 13 points compared to our 5 since.

We're almost incable of holding onto a lead, or reversing a deficit.

We've scored 10 and conceeded 18 in 12 games.

Can someone please explain where the light is? Because I'm beginning to doubt we're in a tunnel, I think it's more a peat bog and we're still sinking.

Talking stats, I saw at the weekend we have the 2nd best record in the Championship for discipline, while the top teams are generally at the other end of the table. Could be viewed a number of ways, not committed enough, too lightweight or not enough energy to chase the ball down and get close enough amongst others no doubt. For me most fit into the latter two, I would start questioning commitment if some started to appear to be 'not available' as it appeared with some last season, but for now at least they get started against some pretty poor 'predictive' odds.

I think we've also lost more points from a winning position than any other club - 14 I think, losing 4 times after being ahead, and drawing with Watford.

I know if Cummings had been Bernal he'd have just hacked the guy down, preferably outside the box, for the first and taken his red for the team.

Think it's only 3 loses from being ahead; West Brom, P'boro & Sheffield. Draw with Watford, won against Preston.

Seeing as we've only managed to score any goals at all in 6 of the games this season it's hard to do much worse.

12 games played, 13 if you include tonight and of those 13 games 7 have been against the 8 sides I reckoned we'd be lucky to get anything from this season given our circumstances; Preston, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, WBA, QPR, Cardiff & Sheff U (the 8th was Ipswich  )

Of the other 6 games our record is

Forest 0-0
Watford 1-1
Doncaster 0-0
Perterborough 2-3
Barnsley 3-1
Swansea 0-0

Which is Pld 6, W 1, D, 4, L 1, F 6 A 5 Pts 7

So given that the 9 remaining clubs we have to play - excluding Ipswich and QPR - to the new year should be more or less around our standing perhaps things may get better....
