Are the players fit enough?

by Terminal Boardom » 04 Oct 2009 19:31

This weekend is the first that I have read about a general lack of conditioning within the squad. Some Nobbers have stated that Big Watch Man has cut down the physical training in favour of more ball work. Well, if yesterday's debacle is anything to go by, more work on BOTH fronts is needed.

The English game has always been based on fitness and stamina. Therefore, what is going on at Hogwarts?

Didn't we have the same post yesterday?

We sacked our fitness coach in the summer, replaced him with Rodgers' mate from Chelsea and Watford.

Maybe he ain't as good as our previous. All Clarke, Goodman and Coole (God knows what his actual name was) were very highly rated.

The second half performances have certainly been weak in most of our games so far this season...partly Rodgers strange tactics/substitutions but also in part the team does seem to run out of steam.
So yep fitness does seem to be an issue which needs sorting out and soon.

I read a couple of posts yesterday so thought that a specific thread might help some of those less fortunate than us.

Ideal Clearly Howard is totally unfit. He belongs in a pub, not on the pitch!
There are others that also look knackered very early in matches, there seems to be something wrong with our (lack of a) fitness regime.
For example, some of the "young'uns" look knackered way too early, Sigurdsson or what his name is, he looks winded after a short jog.

Quite simply it would appear that we have gone from being one of the highest-fitness teams in the league, to being one of the lowest stamina teams, in just a very short time. This would indicate that Rodgers' fitness-mate that he brought with him, does not appear to be doing what is needed.

If it is indeed true that Rodgers has abandoned part of the fitness training in favour of "passing it about 5-a-side practice" then clearly it is the manager who is at fault - AGAIN.

I am very concerned by this development, what will happen around Christmas time when the games are frequent with fewer days rest in between? Our players will be totally knackered, I can see us being in real trouble then!!!

Interesting theory.

I've only been to a few games this season so who did you think "looks knackered" and in which games? Which games that you've been to makes you think Howard should be in the pub rather than on the pitch? I must admit when I've seen Sigurdsson he looks as fit as the proverbial butcher's dog so let us know the games you've seen where he "looks winded"

Or, more importantly, how will our players cope with the heavier pitches and worse weather as we move into autumn and winter?

I train up to 5 times a week and I'm particualry keen in my ripe old age of warm up stretching. No surprise then that I commented to my wife on Saturday that the players did not seem to be taking the pre-match stretching seriously. There was banter, chatting instead of doing what they were asked, 'bouncing' on the stretch (a real no-no), holding calf strecthes by the toe and worst of all, only holding for about 5 seconds.

Indicative of the focus, possibly, or the 'tuition'.

^ Further evidence of the shambolic way this football club is being run. Takes me back to the bad old days of Branfoot and Haselden. I remember talking many times to Stuart Beavon and he told me that Haselden's idea for players to recover from injury was for them to go on a 10 mile run.

Interesting this has been mentioned. I was saying to mates the other day how our 'downturn' happend once Jon Goodman stopped being the fittness coach after the first Prem season... have to clutch at some straws sometimes I guess

But at the moment we really do not look 'match fit' or fit enough to do 90 mins worth of chasing down and moving with the ball!!
