Brendan Rodgers successful at Reading- prediction thread

by Basingstoke Royal » 18 Sep 2009 20:18

Clearly our team is getting better every game and we have improved from the embarrassment we became at the end of last season.

We now have some good young players mixed with experience and I for
one believe the future is bright. BR is the man to take us up, maybe not this year but that's acceptable.

This board contains quite a few people that just don't understand football or can't come to terms with the rebuild we are going through and they are probably the fair weather fans that bought half season tickets in our promotion year.

Sorry for the positivity around the team, but I'm in full support of BR.

Is there anyone else out there?

just look at any Watford website

He arrived with nothing (they hated him)

and yet left leaving them feeling bitter (they didn't want him to leave).

That in itself speaks volumes

I'll be concerned if we aren't scoring come next month.

I won't be concerned if we aren't winning every game, just as long as we aren't throwing them away like the second half of last year.

I obviously don't want the club to go down, but I would be shocked if any other manager wasn't having the same difficulties finding goals as Brendan.

exactly. Lost all of our big names and working with limited resources.

I enjoyed the game the other night, it's been a while since I can say that at home.

Rodgers seems to have built his own team despite supposedly limited resources. How many of Coppells team are here now and how many were brought in during the transfer window?

Loving the style of football, love his approach and honest interviews - providing we are not involved in relegation scrap he has my full support.

Coppell's: 16 (4)
Federici, Pearce, Ingimarsson, Armstrong, Kelly, Kebe, HRK, Karacan, Siggurdsson, Matejovsky, Tabb, Davies, Gunnarsson, NHunt, Long, Church
(Harper, Rosenior, Henry & Bignall out on loan)

Rodgers': 7
Bertrand(L), Cummings, Mills, O'Dea (sL), Howard, McAnuff, Rasiak

Coppell's team Out: 3[+2 probably] (5)
Pre Rodgers - Murty, Hahnemann, Duberry, Lita & Sodje(?)
Post Rodgers - Doyle, SHunt, Bikey

Might have missed one or two here and there.

To be fair most of the youngsters named there never played for
coppell and weren't signed by coppell. They were from the academy which Rodgers was responsible for.

They aren't all Rodgers academy signings, but some are. I'm not going to look up which.

I do think it's disingenuous to call the academy players "Coppells" though.

Siggurdsson, Bignall, Davies and HRK didn't make a start for Coppell to the best of my knowledge.

Pearce, Kelly, Karacan, Henry, Long and Church did.

4/6 =/= most. Rodger's was away for what? 5 years? Which means most of those players were 15 or less when he left. Of course he had an influence, but they were as much Eamonn Dolan's players, if not more so, than Rodgers.

Coppell was in charge when they all signed their professional contracts, so he effectively signed them.

Coppell's 16:(Hardly 1st choice as has been said)
Fed - reserve keeper
Ingi, Stretch, Kebe,NHunt - 1st team
Tabb, Gunnarsson, Long, Marek - bit-part
Pearce - youngster only just breaking into the first team
Kelly - limited game time
HRK - on loan at the Swine
Jem - see Pearce,
Sig - didn't play for Coppell
Davies - on loan at Aldersh*t
Church - Loan moves
Henry - see Kelly
Bignall - didn't play
Harper and Rosenior - As you say have to all intents and purposes been cleared out by Rodgers.
The pre Rodgers players were never available to him so don't count.

I'd say this is his team.

Of course it's Rodgers team now, but we should certainly acknowledge that it is a team based on an excellent young legacy left by Coppell. And the majority of players remain originally Coppell's. As is always the case for any new manager for at least a season if not two.

Coppell was involved with their development I'm sure but, They are not directly his players especially when you factor in Rodger's hand in their footballing education.

If we continue to improve as much as we have, we will be a force to be reckoned with soon. I just hope he gets the time.
