Assists

by andrew1957 » 22 Jan 2009 19:11

With the possible departure of Stephen Hunt I thought it would be interesting to compare the assists provided by wide players and full backs this season compared to 2005/6.

2005/6
Little 14
Shorey 11
Convey 10
Hunt 6
Oster 4
Murty 1 - total 46

So far 2008/9
Hunt 16
Kebe 8
Rose 3
Armstrong 2
Henry 1
Convey 1 - total 31

The figures are a bit weighted by the fact that Shorey was the main corner taker in 05/06 whwereas Hunt is today but it does make interesting reading.

Hunt already has more assists than Little did all season. Kebe is doing well with 8.

But most significantly our three leading assist providers that season are effectively no longer with us (Convey excepted). I hope that even if Stephen Hunt does go someone else will step up and take his place providing assists just as he took over from Convey.

And the point is? 27 assists in 05/06 from left sided players compared with 19 this? Two thirds of the season gone? Do the maths!

We score so many more goals from set pieces recently than we have in previous years. Mainly because our goal threats (Doyle and Nhunt) are good in the air. So S.Hunt has got a lot more assists.

Oh come on. I think I would have got a few goals playing centre forward for Reading this year.

This clearly shows the problem we have this season that only the wingers are contributing seriously to assists and the fullbacks just aren't producing anywhere near enough. Shorey and Murty got 12, Rosenior and Armstrong have 5.

I know Shorey took set pieces, but I don't remember us getting a vast amount of goals from corners in that season. Besides its not massively common for freekicks and corners to go in from the first touch.

The thing is, Shorey didn't even take all the set pieces, or even the ratio that SHunt takes. Henry, Harper, Karacan and Convey have taken a handful between them, the rest have been Hunt. When we went up, Shorey, Convey, and Little shared most of them with Oster and Hunt generally taking ahead of Shorey when they came on (with the exception of direct free kicks).

Can you do the same table but assists in open play ? You'll get a very different picture then and it will be a more valuable one in terms of player contributions.
Also, a small point, but Convey has 2 this year. Sonko header at Charlton and NHunt v S. Wed. In terms of assists per minutes on the pitch he is probably our star man :)

I wish HNA? would stop comparing this season to the record-breaking one.
Even if we had the same players playing the same way, we would never be able to get 106 points again.
 This season we've had good games, average games and very, very bad games. Get over it. Every club has them.

Nothing at all to do with the quality of the crosses then? N Hunt and Doyle do not have go-gadget necks or legs.

Interesting to note that these 'assist' stats only account for about 50% of our goals.

Also, the 05/06 team used to score less 'assisted' goals as a proportion of goals (46% as opposed to 54% this season if these figures are all league related only).

I'd question the real authority on any 'assist' statistic unless it takes into account those who played a key role in creating the goal. For example, for Hunts goal the other day Kebe would presumably have been awarded the assist, but the goal was all about Hunts cross and his brothers finish.

If, for exmaple Harper playes a defensive splitting pace to release Kebe who only has to touch the ball across the face of goal for Doyle to tap in who has got the assist? Not the man who created the chance with the defence splitting pass.
