Best RFC forward of all time? Part one

by SpaceCruiser » 18 Jun 2007 14:33

So, here we go again, vote away! The run down on each player:

Trevor Senior

A player from the era of Ian Branfoot, scored loads of goals to propel Reading up to the old Second Division. Spent a couple of seasons away at Watford and Middlesbrough before coming back to score more goals for Reading as if he'd never been away. Retired about the time when Mark McGhee was establishing himself as the new Reading manager.

Robin Friday

Famously a cult hero at Reading, apparently was very skillfully but with poor discipline. Drugs and booze destroyed his career, but the short time he was at Reading he helped them get promoted from the old Division Four and eventually transferred to Cardiff City in the old Second division where he didn't settle. His wonder goal against Tranmere is still talked about to this day and many people claimed that they were there to see him score that goal....

Ronnie Blackman

He has an entry in Wikipedia which reads:

"(born 2 April 1925 in Portsmouth) was a striker with Reading Football Club.

Blackman joined Reading in 1946 from Gosport Borough, making his debut for Reading with a 5-2 defeat v Bristol City. In the second half of the 1948/49 season, Blackman became a regular goal scorer, scoring the three goals in the 3-0 win v Leyton Orient on 12 February at Elm Park, in the Reading team that finished second to Swansea in the old Third Division (south). His goalscoring form continued and in the 1950/51 season he scored three of the four goals in the 4-2 win v Bristol City on 23 March.

Blackman played a vital role in the Reading team that finished second in the 1951/52 old Third Division, narrowly missing out on promotion. Towards the end of that season, within the space of three weeks, Ronnie scored a total of 10 goals at Elm Park - including five goals against Southend United on 14 April and four against Bournemouth on 3 May to end the season on a high note.

In 1953, Blackman left Reading to join Nottingham Forest with the club record for the number of League goals scored - 158."

Jamie Cureton

When Nicky Forster got injured in a pre-season friendly game in the summer of 2000, Alan Pardew moved to buy Jamie Cureton from Bristol Rovers for a bargain £250,000 and he was an instant hit at Reading, scoring 30 goals in his first season. His penalty against Wigan was saved, from which Nicky Forster scored to send Reading to the play-off final, where Jamie scored the first goal. After that season, Jamie continued to bang in the goals, but loss of form saw him in and out of the team. Eventually moved to Busan Icons in South Korea on a free after playing his last game for Reading against Wolves in the First Division playoff semi final. He will be best remembered for scoring that goal at Brentford that would secure Reading's promotion.

Jimmy Quinn

Brought to the club by Mark McGhee from Bournemouth and scored an amazing 40 goals to fire Reading to the division 2 triumph of 1993/4. Eventually became a joint manager in partnership with Mick Gooding. Amazingly enough, Jimmy Quinn never has scored a hat-trick for Reading. Superb player who also made international appearances for Northern Ireland.

Kevin Doyle

Steve Coppell's eye for a bargain unearthed an Irish gem from Cork City in the summer of 2005 and Kevin went onto be a hit at Reading. He scored 19 goals to fire Reading to a recordbreaking 106 points for the Championship win and made a successful debut season in the Premiership by scoring 13 league goals. Earned his first Irish cap last season and scored his first international goals, no doubt he will go on to be a big star.

Dave Kitson

Another of Steve Coppell's bargains, arrived from Cambridge United and gradually forced his way into the manager's plans. Won Reading fans' hearts by scoring two goals against Alan Pardew's West Ham in the season of 2003/4 and established himself as a regular. Scored a few goals the following season, including a hat-trick against West Ham! Then played his role in the record breaking 106 point season by scoring 22 goals and would have contributed more to the first season in the Premiership if he wasn't so unfortunate to get an injury from a horrible Chris Riggot tackle on the opening day of that season.

Kerry Dixon

A player from the Maurice Evans era, he was at Reading between 1980 and 1983, and scored 51 goals before moving to Chelsea for £175,000.

And how fair a description is this, when you consider the veritable essays written about some other players?

No mention of being the League's top scorer - in a relegated team - and scoring 26 goals despite being injured for over 2 months?

No mention of scoring 4 goals in a game that we lost 7-5?

No mention of being our record sale at the time, and then topping the Second Division scorers the year after leaving us, and the First Division scorers the next year?

And no mention of being a kid discovered by Reading who went on to play for England?

Sorry, I didn't really know much about Kerry Dixon, just that he went on to play for Chelsea - I know I'm not being fair, but I didn't really see him in action and was hoping somebody like you would fill in the gaps for me. And you've just done that, thanks. ;)

I think he was referring to the fact your user name is Kitson and you said he shouldn't be in this poll.

He would have been in, but his nomination rounded the last defender, but missed from 4 yards.

I find Spacey Poll slightly less baffling than his namesake Graham.
