K(h)alifa - the inside info (sort of)

by 1960 » 18 May 2007 17:20

My brother lives in Portugal and bizarrely supports Boavista. When he found that we had bought him he said:

Ah, that’s a shame – I liked him.
Central defender, been playing recently as holding midfelder.
Some spectacular own goals (…)

Bit of a Bikey then (apart from the own goals).

...just out of curiosity - how does one bizarrely support a football team - does he go to matches wearing no clothes, walking on his hands? Or do you mean that you think it's bizarre that your brother supports Boavista?</pedant>

OK, commas round the 'bizarrely' would have worked, but given the punctuation-blindness of most people on this board I didn't see the need.

And to explain the bizarre nature of his affliction. He lives in Lisbon and Boavista play in Porto, a four hour drive away, when Benfica and Sporting are on his doorstep. When you are born into a team you have no choice, but he selected Boavista with a free choice.

...fair point!

And you're right, it's perhaps a little bizarre that someone would choose a team that are a four-hour drive away to support rather than their local team... especially if their local team is traditionally a "bigger" team... a bit like someone living (& born) in Manchester or Newcastle choosing to support Reading perhaps...

P.S. Thanks for the interesting informational tidbit by the way...!

To pursue the subject kind of. A friend of mine who was born and bred in London supports Accrington Stanley and regularly goes to watch them. It's not because he's trying to be 'eccentric'. He liked the name as a kid and has followed them ever since. I don't think it's that odd. I only lived in Reading briefly between the ages of 2 and 6 years old. I'm 40 now and can't imagine supporting anyone else. I live in Melbourne now but, quite honestly, the only heartfelt partisan interest I take in any sport is Reading football club. I love sport but other than the Royals' results I couldn't really care less how any nation does in any sport whatsoever.
