Phil Cullimore It's been an interesting couple of weeks which have opened up my eyes to the difference between the so-called 'top teams' in the Premiership and those of us who are establishing ourselves. It is, however, a sign that Reading are no longer being perceived as a quaint little side but a potential player in the long game.
I've discovered that if the 'top' teams makle several changes for a match it is squad rotation, if Reading do it they are disrespecting the competition. I've discovered that if you are a 'top' team and you break the opposing goalkeeper's nose with your knee, or kick your opposing centre half in the head these are accidents, but if you play for Reading then accidental contact with an opposition player is tantamount to premeditated murder. I've discovered that if you hide behind the phrase 'my opinion' you can vilify a town, its football team, a great philanphropist, a true gentleman, an honest footballer and a respected coach in the national press wihtout fear of reprisal.
I've also discovered that I support a remarkable club who have shown again and again by the dignified refusal to be drawn into response and debate that they are doing the right thing. I hold out a forlorn hope that maybe the rest of the Premiership will one day rise to our standards, but doubt it will be in my lifetime.
Amen to that.
