Conflict of interests, the Hunt's

by Brogue » 17 Jun 2025 12:56

looks like Paudie O'Connor is coming in, and Matty Jacobs both of which have Stephen Hunt as their agent. Is it healthy to have a football agent as the brother of our manager?

It can't hurt.

As long as S.Hunt is acting in the best interest of his client and not just shunting them towards us, then I don't think anyone can complain.

Relationships play a big part in football esp. when it comes to transfers.

indeed it can have its benefits for sure. But let's say for what ever reason O'Connor isn't getting in the team around January time...

Stephen - "sounds like a you problem, Noel"

My biggest concern would be, are the only players Noel Hunt can think of buying are those who he knows through his brother.

I'd want us signing the players we need based on metrics such as, are they the best available? not just the ones we know.

Given Hunt isn't the head of recruitment, Brian Carey is, I would expect that there is a pretty thorough review of options going on - based on Carey's track record.

Happens all the time - relatives of players becoming agents.

Don't think it matters too much as long as Carey and Jacobson are handling recruitment. Didn't seem to hinder us when Joe Dolan was recommending players to his brother and if anything, I reckon it gives us the edge if the player in question is one of Hunt's clients

I imagine S Hunty looks back on his RFC time with fondness, and has communicated that to his client. My only concern is; are they any good?

O'Connor is a stand-out CB at this level with some potential to step up to Champ. Jacobs not sure about but still only 24.

I'd be delighted with both signings ...

In most situations I would think something like that would be less than ideal.

However, our situation and the Hunts is rather different. I believe that both Stephen and Noel think far too much of our club to screw it over for their own personal gain. So it's probably an ideal situation!

Think Brian Carey would have a lot of input here though. And the fact that O’Connor is actually rather good and getting a lot of adulation on here already rather suggests that he is the best available to the club in its current state.

I absolutely adore the Hunt brothers, but, yes, there is definitely a risk of conflict of interest. Obviously.

I reckon it would be pretty easy for them to act fraudulently, so probably could hurt. But hopefully they're both professional and there's some appropriate oversight.

Potentially quite helpful.

Yes, we should get an agent putting in a good word about the club to his clients which can only help. And while there could be conflict the fact remains that any player has to be “sold” to Brian Carey and JJ as well and already have more faith in them being beyond reproach then we ever had in Dai, Pang and their mate Kia.

Given the emphasis Rob has already made about transparency in all financial affairs, I cannot see any danger of anything nefarious.

Of course if your brother is a well respected football agent and you're a manager in need of some new players, there's an obvious advantage.

Conflict of interest is a regular challenge all businesses face. If the club is being run sensibly, I would imagine there are extra steps in the process to stop Garry Monk style situations from happening.

Biggest surprise for me is he’s got a 4 year deal.

Pleasant surprise I hope.

Really nice to see that not only have we signed a sort after player for the level but we have tied him down to a deal for the whole of his peak years - he'll be 31 when the deal ends. Means, for a change, if he performs well and a club further up the pyramid wants him, we can get a fee or we should have a solid performer who will end up with 150 plus apps to his name by the end of his deal.

Nice to feel positive about a deal for a change.
