new royal

by royal mariner » 30 May 2013 13:03

Hi everyone, im after some information from you all if you could help. Having followed Grimsby town for the last 20 years myself and a few fellow mariners have decided to take a year out from following our team, many reasons have made us decide this but the main one being frustration with the team.
We haver all decided to follow a championship team for next season chosen at random, this will include attending games home and away buying merchandise, pretty much what we would have done with our own team.
I have pulled Reading fc out of the hat and to be honest im quite excited by the prospect of being a royal for a year. what I would like to know are your thoughts and some info on the team, manager, players coming in and out as I don't really know much about the club. Also best stand to seat during match days, pubs to have a pre match pint etc. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome.

Team - Difficult to say at this moment. We'll know more about how things are shaping up at the end of the summer, for the moment our strengths probably lie with our wingers. In Robson-Kanu, Kebe, McAnuff, and McCleary we have 4 guys who should tear things up next year. We have plenty of technically quite proficient players in midfield, but do lack size and stature. Fortunately with a new manager hopefully better style of football is coming which will allow us to get the best out of them. Our current POTS is Adam Le Fondre, a player I'm sure you know a bit about from his time in the lower leagues. If we keep him he should get >20 goals next year.

Manager - We sacked Brian McDermott in March after a bad run of results that left us 4 points from safety. While many neutrals have pointed out the ruthlessness in this decision, many of us believe it was the right one given the overly direct style of football we'd been playing over the last couple of years. Nigel Adkins has been looking to instill a more fluid style, and while the results haven't picked up performances certainly have done..and we're cautiously optimistic for further progression next season. As you'll find opinions on this subject are very much split across the fanbase, so expect a few heated deb8s over the coming months.

Transfers - Your guess is almost as good as ours. We've got a relatively new owner with fresh ideas, and a new manager, so most of us aren't sure what to expect this summer. Expect a few European players to come in though, given that's where our scouting network has focused this season.

Stadium - A bit isolated so not too many pubs in the vicinity. Your best bet is to either go in the Jazz Cafe before the game, which is part of the stadium complex, or go to a pub in town and get the bus to the stadium after. The East Stand is the most vocal of the stands, sit there if you're looking for the most authentic experience.

Academy - This is the most exciting part of the club atm. We've got some excellent younger players, such as Dominic Samuel, Jordan Obita, and Aaron Tshibola..all of whom are England Youth Internationals, as well as an U18 team that finished 2nd in the Elite League this season. Much of the new investment is going into that, and given we have a manager who has shown in the past that he gives youth a chance this is probably where the main theme for next season lies.

It's never dull following Reading, so prepare yourself for 12 months of drama, despair, frustration, and occasional elation.

Finally (this is a tradition of all newcomers to HNA).... F*ck off newbie :!:

Good choice Dale, as our Russian over lord ( nice guy) tells us we are going to win the league next season, so you can feel smug.

Talking of smug, our new manager talks in clichés. You will fit right in once you have learned a few simple ones. Here are some examples
'' The players attitude and application have been first class ''
'' We want to play through the thirds of the pitch''
'' It's about winning games of football ''

And apparently the goalie is the most important player on the pitch, so it's a good job we have an outstanding one in our young England ( ha! ) international Alex McCarthy ( who we would like to keep hold of next season, please Anton, but you can sell your Russian friend Pogrebnyak and buy us a exciting new striker instead, please.)

Finally ,We have a mythical player called Daniel Carricco, who may actually only have been a computer generated image all along, but it is good fun trying to spot him. Enjoy.

Hello Dale, Nice to have you on board!

As you know, not a good season last year but we are all exited for this season. Under Adkins, we will play an attractive and attacking style of football, which of course will please the fans. I believe he is the right man for the job to get us back up to the premiership.

As for transfers, expect a few ins and outs. The club have already released 5 players who are: Harte, Hunt, Shorey, Tabb and Church. I also will expect the likes of Caricco, Pog and others to leave. I am not sure about players coming in, a few have been rumoured, however there is nothing more than that at the moment.

Matchdays: Around the Mad stad (Madejski) there are hardly any pubs which fans go to drink, so depending on your travel arrangements, I would suggest getting a drink in town if you're that desperate and getting the bus to the ground, you could also use the Jazz café in the stadium. the East stand is definitely the stand with the most atmosphere, mainly Y24,25 and 26 so I would recommend sitting around that area.

Hope this has helped.

You should also try to memorise Man in the Glass by Dale Wimbrow

When you get what you want in your struggle for self,
And the world makes you King for a day,
Just go to the mirror and look at yourself,
And see what that man has to say.

For it isn't your Father, or Mother, or Wife,
Whose judgment upon you must pass.
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the man staring back from the glass.

You may be like Jack Horner and "chisel" a plum,
And think you're a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you're only a bum
If you can't look him straight in the eye.

He's the fellow to please, never mind all the rest,
For he's with you clear up to the end,
And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the man in the glass is your friend.

You may get what you want down the pathway of years,
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears
If you've cheated the guy in the glass.

We never really spend any money every and only buy players from the Ryman League. Although we've got some Ruskis in charge now and we're anticipating this might change. We have a winger called Jimmy Kebe who is god, famous for pulling his socks up with the ball at his feet to get a West Ham player sent off, taking the piss out of every full back in the Championship and many in the Premier League, and tweeting that he was moving to Newcastle, only to say five minutes later that he was confused as he thought all French players were meant to go there.

We all expect to go straight back up so I hope you're looking forward to a comfy 14th place.

MMMMMMMAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

My Sunday team has a couple of Grimbarians in it and they've taken us to a few Town games in the last couple of years. They've become a fully-fledged second team for about half a dozen Reading fans. Even TBM (who drew my attention to this thread) came to the FA Trophy Final with us.

Drop me a PM if you want to catch up with our gravy loving Northern Boys if you do venture down for a home game as I'm sure they'll be delighted to reminisce about the best place to get fish & chips in Cleethorpes with someone who shares their passion for the subject.

You lost the Trophy final, knocked out in the play offs and now you’ve drawn Reading out of a hat?

May I recommend you steer clear of the office sweepstake for The Derby this weekend and don't climb any ladders.

Anyone else remember the FA Cup 4th Round replay in 1989, typical Reading crap cup draw 4th division Grimsby away.....draw up north, replay at EP.....lose 2-1 thanks to a woeful last minute Gilkesy backpass and several hundred inflatable cod danced around the Town End.

Another skill you must develop, particularly as we are entering a new transfer window, is the ability to talk ad naseum about whether Gylfi Sigurrdson will or will not be returning to his natural home at reading fc. You may possibly have heard of him: reasonable player, could do with a bit more pace, plays a bit part for Spurs and occasionally scores a goal for them?
Anyway, at the beginning of the transfer window the rumblings begin, building to a crescendo with hundreds if not thousands of HobNob posts throughout the coming weeks, until the final hours when all Reading fc fans must keep vigil throughout the night, praying and fasting, before the inevitable disappointment. It is endemic to the population of Berkshire and seems to be a learned behaviour, passed down from father to son through the generations, but give it your best shot.

I remember going to Grimsby and seeing some bloke score an own goal from the half way line. Pretty sure Darius Henderson tried to claim it.

Don't forget you need to master our favourite chant.

It's basically some clapping, an awkward 'READING' before fading to inevitable silence.
