20 years ago last weekend

by Jerry St Clair » 10 May 2013 17:42

Swansea tried to demolish Elm Park 5 years ahead of schedule. One assumes they won't be attempting a 20 year anniversary repeat at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Some of the worst stewarding and policing ever! Those scumbags caused hassle all day and were treated with kid gloves.

They've always been a bunch of oxf*rd, with exception of Wembley play off final.

Wales and the Welsh.

Always will be the scummiest, most insignificant, neanderthal suburb of England.

I think you can safely say they will not be attempting that away at Man Utd.

Remember them being a complete nuisance all day that day.

I like it when people blame others for not stopping incidents more effectively, rather than focussing on those people who were actually causing the trouble. It makes you wonder if they really understand life at all.

I understand life perfectly, the blame for the scandal of that day lies with the yobs! But there were still paid people who did not perform and allowed mob rule.

I was there that day in the South Bank. More than just Swansea boys there. Police bottled it. I was surprised Swansea didn't really go for it that day, they would have got away with it if they had, most seemed happy to sit on the perimeter fence giving it the biggun.

I also remember the following season, when they actually won 2-1 with a great Bowen goal and only about 100 of them behind the goal. Not sure if they were worried about possible revenge or worried the police would be all over them the next time they came to Elm Park.

I was in the Tilehurst End with Eddie Royal, who was taking his young nephew to his first ever game. Proper 'should we stay and watch or shall we take him away from the violence' scenario. We stayed !

Yep, some Swansea idiot climbed the floodlight. Think the whole ground expected him to fall. Fair play that he didn't.

I was there. Walked from town with a mate and was advised by the police to walk via Tilehurst Road as a mob of Swans fans were on the rampage down the Oxford Road.

I was there too.Always remember that the 'lads' who stood in the corner of the South Bank by the away end were notably absent when it all kicked off. Swansea - were - by their then standards - having a decent season and I think just made the play-offs that year. As mentioned above, brought bugger all the following season but this was more to do with SCFC returning to mid-table mediocrity.

TVP were off supporting Wiltshire who were dealing with Travellers causing problems at Avebury, i think. There where about 5 police in the ground when it all kicked off at about 2.30. By half time the ground was swarming with riot police, fresh from clubbing pikeys.

Thr following season TVP went nuts. The game was all-ticket for Swansea and police took coaches and vans off the motorway and held them in the car park at Rivermead before escorting them to the ground.

On the Year Of The Royals video there is a feature that follows McGhee for this game, including his Churchillian "Gilkesey, you've gotta start" half time team talk. The are hundreds of coppers visible in the background when McGhee arrives at the ground.

"Gilkesey, you've gotta start. I've got Jonesey and Razza on the bench itching to get on for you"

I'm sure Gilkesey was worried to death about being subbed off for Tom Jones or Ray Ranson....

I remember a few white vans stopping in front of us on the Bath Rd on the way in and a big gang of Taffs leaping out and relieving themselves in the bushes. I though it would be a long afternoon!

We had a 5 year old girl with us for her first game. (Safe in D stand). Towards the end of her second game she asked when the police horses were coming on - turns out that was the only bit she enjoyed / remembered.
