Ark Royal
Norfolk Royal That's not really an overhead by Ollie tbf. He more sort of fell into it by the looks of it.

What a day that was. Remember it clear as anything which isn't bad considering it was 33 years ago.

I remember that fat beardy Aldershot player stood on the goal line, can't remember his name though. Also, is that Youlden playing number five for the Shots that day?

Good old Ollie. Just as likely to smash one in from thirty yards or clear the Tilehurst End from a yard out.

Yes, that is Tommy Youlden wearing 5 for the Shite. Aldershot: the place where old Royals go to die.

Can't recall the guy on the line. The keeper is Glen Johnson.

The bottom pic is Steve Hetzke celebrating the 4th goal up the town end near the end - a thumping header.

Happy days - we also beat another promotion rival Portsmouth in front of a bigger crowd 2-0 on good friday - great goal from George Shipley.

blythspartan I have seen some really great Reading games over the last 40 years and also many dire games as well. There are lots of games I would love to see again like the second leg of the play off semi final against Wigan. However, If I could only choose one game to re-live it would be in the 1978/79 season when we beat Grimsby 4-0 at Elm Park and I am sure that John Alexander scored all 4 goals. That game made a great impression on me as a young Reading fan. What would be the one game that you would love to re-live?

Some photos to add to your memories:

John Alexander is now some bigwig in corporate circles behind the scenes at Man U is he not?

Cheers for the memories...........

I am sure it was in the same season as this game but did anyone here go to Port vale away for the last game of the season when we won 3-0. I went with me old man and I remember it being a really great atmosphere and there was some argy bargy with their fans.

Yes, there was a little bit of handbags during and after the 3-0 win at Vale Park, but nothing too serious.

Three things I remember from that day: Appeared to have all four seasons during the 90 minutes, including hailstones and what appeared to be snow; did not find out that we had won the title until much later after hearing that Doncaster had beaten Grimsby; our coach broke down in Oxford on the way home and got back to Reading just twenty minutes before the pubs closed, so little time to celebrate.

Norfolk Royal I'd probably say that four-niller we had against Aldershot at home circa late 70s, think it was a bank holiday Monday and big crowd around 15k. That was just heaven on earth for a 16-year old as I was at the time.

My first ever Reading game.

My abiding memory of the game at Vale Park.

A big red BRS 7.5 tonne lorry pulls up in the car park.
Driver gets out, pulls up the roller shutter door at the back.
Hordes of drunken Reading fans literally spill out of the thing.
Coppers look on open mouthed.
Happy days.

Green Probably the Middlesbrough Coca Cola cup quarter final. Sure we lost in the end but it was a close run thing, and I was young enough that I hadn't grown out of football at the time.

The 'Boro goal still grates on me.

All down to the ref - the "Butcher of Bootle" - George something.

Cue a rant from handbags harris on the subject.....

I remember congregating in some sort of brick building/out house on the away terrace singing and sheltering from the snow, sleet and hail stones.
IIRC our lot started throwing rubble from the terrace at the Vale fans who decided to run on to the pitch. For some reason they wanted a word with us

I was also on that coach that broke down on the A34 outside Hinskey Hill in Oxford.
Every time I drive pass it triggers my memories of that day.

Happy days!

Absolutely loving those pictures of the Aldershot game. Despite being a kid of 7 and watching from the safety of the Tilehurst End with my dad, I can still remember having a bit of a chuckle about the baldy keeper!
