brian came out on numerous occasions in run up to january and in january at the very least implying the opposite
~'i had a budget, and i spent it all'

Dis'greed, he certainly never said that about January.

.

he did say it.but as you can see i said he said it in the run up to january, when talking about the summer.
in a number of interviews around the same time.

Reading boss Brian McDermott has rubbished suggestions he will be bringing in 10 players in January.

Reports suggested owner Anton Zingarevich would be willing to splash the cash on a new team in the transfer window in order to ensure survival but McDermott has sought to clarify the situation.

"First and foremost I would never sign 10 players in January," he told Sky Sports News.

"We wouldn't even have the budget to suggest we could sign those players.

"The owner actually said we've been looking at 10 players. Well actually we've been looking at hundreds of different players because that's what we do, scouts go out.

"January to January we'll see what we've got budget-wise and what we can do.

"Anyone who comes in January, they've got to be in a position where they can hit the ground running.

"What I don't want is any mixed messages coming out. I knew what my budget was in the summer and my budget was spent. I'm waiting to see what my budget will be in January.

"There isn't a bundle of money to be spent in January and I think it's important that the fans know that because it isn't the case."

Couple that with Zingarevich's comments about the financials not being good last year (in the full press conference on Youtube)

It's clear that there really wasn't much cash available to Brian at all!

The Goat was fed he'll be off when he and Chris Samuelson have made a few million quid profit.

Any other interpreaton is crashingly naive.

Anyone expecting to make a few million quid owning a football club is crashingly naive. :|

royalroo I hope he doesn't have his funds in Cyprus

This is actually an issue....If Cyprus was being used by many Russians for tax avoidance schemes with the Russian authorities, it is highly likely that Russian Billionaires such as the Zingarevich's are exposed in a significant way to the Cypriot thing.

Oh well, our owner may be 40% cash deposits poorer, my heart doesnt bleed.

The Russians were tipped off and 2 Billion euros were taken out Cypriot banks and transferred over the weekend

Funny that. When McDermott first came out with those latter words, many on here (and you may have been one on them) stated that it was merely McDermott and the club up to their usual tricks trying to give other clubs the idea that there was no money available so that we didn't get screwed over when we showed interest in a player.

genome Anyone else think he didn't particularly come off well there? Seemed stressed, mumbled, a bit exasperated.

Critical of Brian for not spending enough in January, so I assume there was plenty of money available. Hammond also gave the same impression. And no scouting done in the summer, which was a bit confusing. Madejski certainly seemed to deflect questions back to him.

At best, camera shy. At worst, shifty. His comments about January spending - lack thereof - were concerning on just about every level.

I'll give Anton another 18 months before he's lost the rest of his hair. He looks like he's aged about 5 years since he's been here.

Agreed.

He's certainly put his cock on the block now. If Adkins isn't backed he'll look like a right idiot.

ROFL at RL's assertion McGhee had a connection with RFC before he joined as player manager and also Winchesters assertion that Adkins would walk into any managerial position outside the top 12.

Sir John looked very tired and old during that press conference. He also needs to admit to be being a slap head with more grace, that 'do is a disgrace.

I got the impression Anton wished he could melt into the background Abramovich style at Chelsea, he didn't look at all comfortable in the spotlight, although that is not a bad thing as he obviously isn't here for the ego boost.

I also thought Sir John was saying the equivalent of this is not a situation of my making, I want nothing to do with it, I am only obliged to be up here....

I thought he looked and sounded uncomfortable with the spending question, neither blaming anybody else exactly, nor taking responsibility for the failure to recruit better quality players.

^ I have to agree....

However I think sometimes Anton get's harshly criticised, English isn't his native language (though he knows it very well) so he's obviously not going to be perfect with how he says things and how that results in him coming across. Being Russian also means a million stereotypes will be in peoples minds.

I thought he did seem uncomfortable at the January question but the journalists weren't very good. Obviously he's still a little naive.

Along the lines of....I have only been a chairman of a football league club for 20 years, what why would I possibly know more than a 30 year old from another country, type dig?

His face just said, give me the other half of my cash and you I will get out from under your feet.

Yeah like that.

It was just after the journalist asked him something along the line of "Brian had been at the club 13 years do you have sympathy for him/would you have done the same".

I get the impression he wasn't originally going to be there. A last minute scramble and name card being placed on the table gave me that indication. Swerving the question directed at him to Anton bout 'footballing' matters indicates to me he's not fully in the loop, not happy about decisions made and certainly didn't want to be there.

SHORT AND CURLY
winchester_royal Adkins didn't need this job, he'd have had his pick of just about every job in England outside the top 12.

What the FK!
"Adkins didn't need this job, he'd have had his pick of just about every job in England outside the top 12."

I think you need your head examined

Well it's been an "exciting" day and all that but this wins my nonsense post of the day award.

The Reading job is a *brilliant* job for Adkins to get. Think about it - no-lose eight game shot at staying in the Premier League. Stay up and you're a hero, go down and it's not your fault.

Then, you're in the Championship with the remnants of a title-winning side and, most importantly, a sack load of cash to spend on players.

I'd take it.
