cmonurz Wigan are enjoying their 4th consecutive season as a Premier League side, and currently sit 7th (or 8th?) in the league. In the context of Stephen Hunt, they are a bigger club.

and they've lost Palacios and Heskey already this month

I agree. It's a no-brainer for players like Palacios and Heskey to leave Wigan. But on the other hand players like Hunty would be happy there. And Mido is going there. He ain't a bad player.

The alternative is we get £5M and then try to sign one of the replacements touted. His club know we have £5M cash and up the asking price. RFC say that they aren't prepared to be taken advantage of and we end up signing no one!

Clubs already know we have cash in the bank. The extra £5 million from Hunt isn't really that much of an issue surely ?

Barry the bird boggler Wigan are a source of depression for me as I fail to see how we could not compete with them when we were in the Premiership but it seems that despite their lower attendances etc. they were able to offer a greater wage structure and generally show more intelligence in the transfer market than we did under JM and SC. OK they haven't been world beaters in the Premer League but they have survived and look to be well on the way to securing another season already.

Don't you think that they may be spending beyond their means? The way they're spending, I wouldn't be surprised if one day they'll suddenly find themselves deep in debt.

They have been very openly and publically funded by former player Dave Whelan who has happily told people over the years that he's spending the money his business empire created. Of course with JJB now down the pan that source of funding may dry up (does he still have a shareholding or is he actually spending the proceeeds of selling it ?)

Our chairman has openly and publically done things differently.

Not sure at what point you can say who has done things 'right' but Whelan seems to have delivered a longer run at the top for his club. Whether the fact that they are 'his' club means they will one day collapse I have no idea.

Whelan's sold off the Rugby League club too, and that wasn't a cheap deal, I can tell you. With the sales of Palacios and Heskey and the rent from the Rugby club, Athletic must be sat on a fair old wad

Depends on whether he's clawing back all his previous spending though, and whether they own the ground or rent it off 'Dave Whelan Holdings'.

Bill Oddie's Beard Apparently it just said on BBC berks he's staying. Anyone hear this?

I heard it.
They said SC had denied that Wigan had been in contact and SHunt trained today (which he wouldn't be if he was talking to Wigan). Reporter said he'd been at training ground at lunchtime and that was when he'd seen SHunt and spoken to SC.

The latter - so in the same boat as JM.

Did he actually play for Wigan? Thought he was a league player.

In the same boat in terms of he has the assets safe but not in terms of how he is prepared to use them !!!

Thanks for the confirmation of who he played for by the way !! Broke his leg in an FA cup final IIRC (which of course rules him out as a Wigan player !)

the funny thing is quite a few people (not Reading fans) seem to have the impression that we got promotion through Madejski bankrolling the team in the same way.

Who is it? Name them. I'm getting fed up with the double standards of mods on here. They find it fine if they say something that's dodgy but quite clearly very clever and funny, but if anybody else does it, delete, ban... twats. For the most.

I posted on this page yesterday that Sky Sports is a straw clutcher just like the tabloids they dont have a clue about what is really going on. Who is their 'source' that says Wigan have agreed a deal for Hunty, tabloid press on the telly, broadcast 100 rumours from 'sources' and one is bound to stick! I look forward to seeing Hunty lining up against Wolves on Tuesday.
