Stoke pay club record £5m for Reading's Dave Kitson

by readingbedding » 18 Jul 2008 08:58

On Five Live and The Mirror.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis shattered the club's transfer record by buying striker Dave Kitson from Reading for £5.5million last night.
Pulis ended weeks of frustration by agreeing a price for the Royals hitman who went to the Potteries to complete the deal.
Kitson had a frustrating time with Reading last season, but Pulis thinks he could snatch the goals that the Premier League new boys will need.
The Potters have been looking to spend ever since they clinched promotion, but this swoop shows that chairman Peter Coates - who made his latest fortune in betting - has the cash to gamble on new signings.

Pulis also wants Ipswich attacker Jon Walters, but several other targets have been reluctant to join Stoke.

He hasn't actually gone yet has he?! I'd LOL if this was just rumour mongering and Journo's have picked up on it and he's staying!

Although I was first to break this news as FACT (and if he changes his mind I will look silly), I am gutted. For me, Kitson was the first step in the right direction by Coppell. And anyone who hates footballers is good in my books. Don't resent him for the move - he wants prem football and I think he is good enough. But the manner in which Stoke play football will surely frustrate him. But at least now we have some money to play with.

But please god, will someone buy Hunt....

Other targets have been reluctant to go to Stoke - not Dave though eh? A few more pounds in his pocket to pay for his taxi fares I suppose.

I wonder if he will recieve the same "bordering on racism" abuse he suffered from the Stoke fans the last time we played there

After two years of being showered with riches, we're shaping up to have a squad worse than the one that entered the last championship season.

Tens of millions of TV money

Record attendance levels

Highest ever ticket prices (by a mile)

Parachute payment

Record marketing /shirt sales

And now the proceeds of a fire sale. Where is it all?

What's the point of millions in the bank and nothing on the pitch? I've never looked forward to a season less in my 38 years as a supporter. You have to question the priorities of the club.

Who cares.....as Roy Keane says there is no loyalty in football these days...the only loyal ones are the fans...

This appears to be the case at Reading...so if we can get £5.5m for Kits I ain't going to argue...£4m for Shorey when 'arry decides to get his chequebook out....GTFI...

We are all getting worked up about 'our Dave' leaving and I for one will be sad to see him go, but if we get £5million for him, Coppell (contrary to belief) is no fool and he will look for another centre forward type, if he does not already have a target in mind. I don't think they will let Kitson go unless we have a replacement in mind.

I remember feeling the same way when I heard that Kerry Dixon was leaving and he was being replaced by some bloke called Senior!!!!!

Its not always bad when a player leaves!!!!

FFS RL, if you're going to delete a thread, don't post on it first, now I have to retype this.

Bad - we lose a very good striker who would have scored 20 goals in 08/09; and Kits is different to Lita and Doyle, bigger, a better touch, imho, left-footed. We need to replace him with a similar option, but one that isn't simply a lower divisions 'plodder'.

Good - good stuff from whoever negotiated the fee. Imho, Stoke have paid too much in £5.5m. Now let's see the up-front portion of that fee (£2-3m) invested during the transfer window.

I bet if news had leaked earlier that Kitson wanted away and he would probably even join Stoke in order to achieve his aim, season ticket renewals would have been a lot less.

Can't blame him at all. Seriously, do you all really think Kitson wants to play with Kebe & Cisse. Nope.

What on earth are you basing that on?

History would suggest exactly the opposite.

I think if this deal is confirmed as definite it is a good deal for the club. I think Kitson has reached his peak and doesn't really have the pace to make it at a middle/top premiership club on a consistent basis.

I just hope any funds from this deal are used to purchase another quality striker and a right sided player to replace Little.

I think the team of the last 2/3 years had reached its peak and following an avoidable relegation, it needs some changes.

It just concerns me that we have a Chairman who still wants to sell out and a Manager who only really stayed on because of fan persuasion and is unlikely to be here for more than a year. We probably would have been better to have got rid of Coppell and appointed someone else who could have started to build and mould their own team rather than the scenario we look like facing.

Do that many people go to football to see ONE player?? If he joins Stoke if will purely be for the money, and you can not blame him for that.

It won't be for the football as Pulis will continue with the long ball and Stoke will be relegated next season.

Why is everyone thinking we'll spend whatever we get for Kitson on a replacement? When have we EVER done that??
