If you need a coat, and you go shopping for a coat and find out you don't quite have enough money for the one you wanted, you don't just not buy a coat, and get cold, and get cold AIDS, and die.

You need a coat, so you make damn sure you get one.

melonhead there were 3 possible footballers who we identified, played in an area in which we were lacking, we thought we could afford, may be sold, would want to come here, and would most probably fit in wit the group and the ethos.

we failed to bring them in.
its a failure, cos we failed.
but the idea you just keep picking midfielders until one says yes is flawed imo

Sure, and the football world would agree with you, hence the existence of scouts.

dont think the coats/footballer analogy really works

imagine if there was some sort of timed shopping period, and only within that were you allowed to buy clothes, and you needed trousers, shoes, a jumper, and a coat, and we did our best to get all of them. by the end of the shopping period we had got our shoes, our trousers, and our jumper. we tried to get a number of coats we liked that were within our price range, and of decent enough quality, that we actually liked, but they didnt have our size. instead of buying coats that were too expensive, and that we didnt really like we just didnt buy a coat.

actually....... it works well enough.

But what if you already have 3 coats that are maybe a bit worn and not quite as warm as the one you were looking for?

His leg was strapped up when he did play, along with known fitness issues. Plus a team that has been winning games.....

Cos that's my argument isn't it? WHY DIDN'T MCDERMO JUST APPROACH MIDFIELDERS AT RANDOM ONE BY ONE UNTIL ONE SAID YEAH

ANYONE AT ALL. AT RANDOM. JUST SHUT HIS EYES, POINT AND SPIN AROUND FOR 5 SECONDS, STOP AND RUN IN THAT DIRECTION UNTIL YOU COME ACROSS A MIDFIELDER AND SIGN THAT ONE.

YEAH.

How many players for one position do you expect our scouts to identify that they think'll improve us, fit our club and are at a value we find reasonable E-P?

Because it seems we went for three during the window and that's not good enough for you. So what's a reasonable number? And how quickly do you expect the club to put together a deal for a back-up player if the ones ahead fall through? Because at the moment it looks like you expect the club to do it in 15 minutes.

then the second half going for tom ince, and when that fell through still had time to put in three bids for sig.

That really wasn't the most challenging question you've had to deal with on this thread, was it?

It's certainly allowed him a bit more time on the ball which he has greatly benefitted from.

Not much point going for someone different to one of your first three choices, when you believe you've still got a good chance of signing one, if not two of them, and continue to have a chance of signing one of them until about mid-day on the last day of the window and persist until 15 minutes to go.

SSo the window being longer than that really isn't relevant.

More than 3.

Better yet, at least one that we'd get.
