this seasons could have been one of the recent best had the hoops gone all the way around and a blue hoop on the sleeves. i like the thinner hoops, it has a retro feel. such a shame the club seem hell bent on unnecessarily adding the plain back panel. it's been argued to death, but other clubs both top flight down to league two have hoops and stripes all the way around, front and back, and some don't. it is a choice thing, it isn't a rule that has to be adhered to. sadly, someone at the club persists with ruining our shirts. it's reading from the front and leeds united from behind.

Personal favourites are all home shirts from the 70's plus the 2003-2004 Kit@ number. I know the club shop does sell some retro shirts but would have thought they could do more - the Chronicle and Radio 210 shirts have been done in the past, and would have thought the Brooks/Pelada 'Auto Trader' shirt would have been popular. I know it will never happen but it would be great if the 2012/2013 home shirt could be thin hoops all round and the sponsors in a smaller type set just above the badge (a la Man City's away kit last season).

Like most people, a mixture of sentimentality and wanting hoops...

1977-78 (my first games)
1970's (Robin Friday-era)
2001-3 (not sure why, just like it)

Again, like most people, if this season's had hoops, it would be on the list. It doesn't, so it isn't.

Fox Talbot
AthleticoSpizz 1965/69...I guess the question has to be asked....why the sky blue?

amongst the decades of hoops?

Please Mr Bearded club historian?

I don't have a beard but here goes anyway.

Coventry had jsu t been promoted and were getting famous, having changed to sky blue. The Reading board thought this was the secret of their success so copied it. There was a bit of a fashion for same shirts / shorts aroud then - Liverpool went to red shorts in 1964/5 I think, Wolves to old gold shorts not long after. Reading couldn't go to hoops shorts so in order to look modern ...

We also tried Friday night football in the 1960s for a similar reason - fashionability.
Thanks Mr Fox

Friday night football was tried for the 68/69 season in an attempt to boost dwindling attendances. Tranmere had had relative success with Friday night games, avoiding a clash with Everton/Liverpool games. Crowds did rise as Reading made a good start, but dropped as the team fell down the table. Reverted back to Sat/Weds games the following season.
