paultheroyal Not the McDermott way though aka Cummings. Regardless of performances by McCarthy once Federici is fit he will slot straight in. One save made, that is all.

made a couple of decent saves last night.1 Vs palace too.
agreed fed will probably slot back in if he returns before the end of the season and we dont plan to sell him. if not then i dont have a problem with alex in there

Lets not get carried away here. He is a good prospect, and he had a good game last night and seems to be growing in confidence with every game.

That doesn't mean he'll be keeping Federici out, and it doesn't mean he'll make it as a top keeper. It's all encouraging though as his first couple of games he looked a bit edgy and his kicking was a little weak. Between him and Andersen we have two hot properties though so the threat of Federici leaving is one the club can live with.

As for the save just hitting him, well be got himself in a great position for it to hit him and that counts for a lot. He's got a long frame with a great reach and yet he still seems pretty agile. All good things for a keeper. Fingers crossed he continues to kick on.

Does anyone know whether Alex M is a triplet or was that another young Royals keeper?

Serious question. One of our young GKs is a triplet (i.e. one of 3 brothers the same age)

I did not say anything after the Millwall game but McCarthy's kicking was very poor. Last night however, I thought he was as good as Fed. Hopefully it was only nerves in his first full game and last night's version will be the norm - if so we have a great prospect on our hands. I also like the fact he is big at 6-4. He looks like he has the physical attributes to command the area even more than Fed.

Well done McCarthy and may you have a long and successful career.

Oh shut up Jay, he's making a point about how reactionary and extremist everyone is on here, and what small margins there are, not criticising the lad, you 'tard.

Federici has pulled off some stupendous saves as well in his time, yet because he's played the majority of the games this season, he has of course made mistakes (fewer than last season). And those have been on occasion punished.

Suddenly McCarthy comes in and performs somewhere between solidly and great in his couple of games, and people think he's the best thing since Shaka. Over the course of a season he'll make his fair share of mistakes. Federici is still our No.1 and rightly so.

McCarthy has a few more games before he has to worry about his place, and on current performances we can afford not to rush Fed back. But this is essentially just a first brief exposure that will stand him in very good stead in the future.

I can just see the gnashing of teeth and wailing on here the first time he has a dodgy game once Fed is fit. He'll suddenly change to being a pub player and McDermott would be criticised for not bringing Fed straight back in.

i think we get that- just think now probably isnt the time to stop praising the guy for a superb performance and start coming out with the 1 save does not a keeper make shit.
we all know that. its just great for the kid, and the club, that he played well last night.

go roll your eyes elsewhere

I'm not saying don't praise him... I've done exactly that. I'm saying don't over-react and suddenly declare him No. 1 and expect him to be a perfect God. Which is the typical HNA reaction to a couple of good performances. As it is in the exact opposite for a couple of bad performances.

However good McCarthy is Federici will win his place back as soon as he is fit.

I think the club might well risk cashing in on Fed if we don't go up (which I would agree with as we have so many promising young keepers) and so he needs to be in the shop window.

i reckon weve had an offer accepted already, and fed isnt injured at all, but already on his way to arsenal.
hence why we need mcarthy to prove himself over the remainder of the season

Well I wasn't talking to you originally Brenders... you quoted me.

I think the most extreme are a tiny minority, but I think it's evident to some extent in a pretty large proportion.

Not sure what his kicking was like against Watford/Milwall but in the two games I've seen McCarthy play his kicking has been really good and far better than Federici's kicking in the five or so games I've seen him play in in 2011.

He's not as fat as Federici so that has to be good.
