Royal Lady ...but maybe 3 to 4 million on a new striker and at least one new defender could hardly be breaking the bank...

£3 - 4 million in transfer fees, what about the wages? A player signed for that amount is going to be asking c£10k - £12k a week easily, if not more, on a minimum 3-year contract. Say bye bye to all of your income from the Long transfer.

Thank Christ you're not our chairman RL

 Firstly, how do you know what the wages will be and secondly, what do you think the likes of Long etc were on? We're not paying his wages. We paid £2 million for Mills, we're not paying his wages - paying a total of £4 million, say, for 2 new players - isn't going to impact on our books that much - and why shouldn't the Long transfer money be re-invested on more than one player + wages anyway - we still have the money from Mills!

Dear god.

Royal Lady Thanks Andrew - fact is though, Long wasn't *really* worth 6-7 million was he?

In the Autumn of 2010 you said that Long wasn't *really* a footballer. Still in denial I see.

We've won ONE game, it isn't about just losing today - it's about losing at home to a team such as Barnsley - a team that are, apparently, favourites to go down. If we can't get points in our easier games, where are we going to get them? Heads will be down after that game, McD has a hell of a lot to do to get them back up again.

Oh come on, in the grand scheme of things he isn't worth 6-7 million - his price is greatly inflated because a prem team can afford to pay it. In Autumn 2010, though I don't remember saying it, it's quite feasible to have doubted him - he was in Doyle's shadow and wasn't the finished article. Plus he quit a promising career in hurling to take a stab at football in the first place!

25 goals + 16 assists = £6million in today's market.

I think RL alluded to this earlier and I agree wholeheartedly SJM is happy to be in the championship. If we get to the premier league it would be a bonus but it is not something he is going to splash cash on getting like other teams are unless our championship status was threatened. Right now I am sure he is content spending any money he can to pay off the debt for the stadium or whatever else there is owed until he finds the suitable buyer. It's pretty much purgatory for us fans but there isn't much we can do. SJM is leading a steady ship as annoying as it is for most of us that want to see some active ambition on the spending front, but we just have to be patience until he can sell the club to someone just as responsible and respectable (at times) as himself.

We should have shown some real ambition this summer like Leicester and Ipswich.

In the premiership maybe. You don't think there's a comparable player somewhere lower down who would be willing to come to us for a quarter of that?

Further more 2-1 is bad but its swings and roundabouts. We start protesting and picketing against SJM for not spending and he ultimately decides to leave the club in the hands in some saudi named Al poopa doopa who actually has no money then I will be oxf*rd pissed!

That's the point, I don't know anyone who thinks we should spend multi millions - just spending some on better players would be a bonus.

 Leicester and Ipswich?!?!?! What waste loads of money on average players? I'm all up for us spending the odd million here and there like when we got Lita in but not on overinflated egos

Yes, but a comparable player lower down who could do the same job as Long? He doesn't exist.

What makes you think that there are lots of players mulling around who are able to score 25 goals a season?

How much did Mackail-Smith go to Brighton for? He scored 31 goals last season in Divison 1.

£3 million, not even taking into account wages.

And how did he do in the championship 2 seasons ago? Please remind me...

My point is there was someone lower down who cost a quarter of what we sold for Long for. Brighton took a punt. We allegedly didn't sign BWP because he was injured but he's been scoring consistently too.
