Southbank Old Boy
Ian Royal being pessimistic and disgruntled MAY cause harm, but CERTAINLY won't help.

It may help if the players are still sitting in a comfort zone or waiting for a bigger club to come and save them from the mess they find themselves in at little old Reading.

Sometimes people need a kick up the arse.

Much less likely, and roaring on has as much chance to get someone out of their comfort zone.
Besides, my point was how to START the season. Nobody is going to have been underperforming and in a comfort zone at that point.

I agree it's less likely but you said CERTAINLY!

There is a potential for a lot of our players to be underperforming and/or being a pain in the arse before we kick off the season. Look at the likes of Sonko now for a good example.

Ian Royal
Royal Lady Can I just say, that if a bunch of grown men cannot play well if the fans don't encourage them to, have no right to call themselves PROFESSIONAL footballers. I do wish people would stop going on about "it's up to the fans to be optimistic and encourage them" - they're paid to do a job, last season an awful lot of them didn't do their job as well as they could have, and although I don't condone the booing of players, I'm buggered if I think my bit of shouting and clapping is the thing that is spurring them on. Thank you.

Number 2 who didn't really read what I was saying and just made an assumption.

Who here works at their best in a quiet and depressed atmosphere?

I know I bloody don't. I work best in a relaxed, happy and slightly noisy atmosphere. (background burble not cacophony)
LOLZ a plenty!!

So, Ian, when the reserves are playing away and there's maybe 10 RFC fans watching them, do you expect them to lose those games?!

For goodness sake, can we please stop with the doom and gloom and bickering, and act like proper adult football supporters by enjoying a bit of schadenfreude?

I have entertained myself this evening by lurking on Derby County and Birmingham boards and can report that: Derby don't want their players but can't get rid of them, whilst every decent Brum player seems to have publicly announced their intention to leave. Now doesn't that make you feel better?

There's always someone worse off than you, so let's take comfort from that.

We'll see where Derby and Birmingham finish this season compared with ourselves...

You seem to be struggling with a very simple concept.

Large, good, loud support does not equal win, but it MAY help, it certainly won't hinder.

Well yeah, so I could wind up looking as silly at the end of the next season as I did at the end of the last, but it certainly won't stop me from looking for somebody worse off to take the piss out of. That's football.

Whilst I suspect our decent players are taking a leaf out of Coppell's book and are working away quietly in the background with the intent of securing themselves a move! (just to make clear the leaf out of Coppell's book is working quietly, not getting a move!!).

I would like to say LOL (only it isn't funny) at the RTGs who first of all told us that we wouldn't go down last season and then assured us that, even if we did, we would keep our squad together enabling us to bounce straight back! You can't change history but you can look back and learn from it!

Sadly we are likely to see a repeat of the break up of a great squad, just as we did after the Bolton playoff defeat. We can only wait to see whether we have learned and make every effort (including spending the money necessary) to sign real quality players to replace those that leave.

What if the players can't handle the atmosphere and the expectations?

Players sometimes freeze on the big occassions or infront of bigger louder crowds. Just look at Gary Birtles for a prime example.

Is this another Ian Royal certainty or a real one?

I think it's clear that nothing would inspire the team more than to run out for the first home game of the season to a 2/3rds empty stadium full of fans booing them.

Exactly, I remember an old interview with Shankly, saying that the Liverpool players were 100% motivated and encouraged by the Kop booing and slagging the team off...

i was definately in the RTGB(now disbanded), but i never said we will stay up, just that i thought we had enough to
and i for one have been saying most of our best players are likely to leave since the end of the season
so maybe its another RTGB you are on about

I don't want them to hate me though.

I wouldn't work well if someone stood behind me slagging me off.
I'd much rather they stood behind me cheering me on - plus I'd love them for it.
