he gets a move to german prem, to play for one of the richest up and coming teams there, earn more, in a higher profile league where skill and technique is king instead of size and speed, for a higher profile team than reading,

i totally and massively fail to see how anyone can say that with a straight face

2 world wars, 1 world cup most people haven't heard of this club

:?:

I'd suggest that most people in football have heard of Hoffenheim and the massive amount of adulation they received across Europe during their first year in the top Bundesliga; a performance that also highlighted what a great league the Bundesliga is to watch and (presumably) play in. That includes our Gylfi.

2 world wars, 1 world cup Good luck Gylfi.

Agreed+. Mrs Ark does not watch or even have a passing interest in football, but even she had heard of Hoffenheim - "...that's the German team from the small village, isn't it?".

You're not suggesting that 2WW&1WC is an ignorant buffoon who cares not for the world beyond our shores, are you?

Not sure if this has already been mentioned but in the E-Po McD is quoted as saying that Gylfi cried and it was a very emotional departure and McD loves him to bits.

Some people, who have been at the same job for a long time, get a little emotional when leaving.

It's quite normal really.

I'm sure he'll miss the guys he grew up with at Reading, but he's decided it's not a big enough reason not to go and have a stellar career in Europe.

I did - and I hated my job. Cried a fair bit while I was there too. It was the people I missed, not the job.

2 world wars, 1 world cup
prostak My Wigan comment was more to do with their artificial rise through the league pyramid thanks to one rich megalomaniac throwing money at them, naming everything after himself.

I've not seen many Bundesliga games so can't comment other than my gut feeling.

Hence why I have the strength of character and honesty to retract my earlier statement that it would be better for him to eye a Premiership move with the likes of Arsenal.

But my same lack of knowledge on the subject leads me to research further and change my mind again - most people haven't heard of this club and if they really are a Wigan/Charlton of German football I can only laugh at the assertion that it was a fantastic move and stick to my guns. Not that I particularly care either way.

I've spoken to two people affiliated with the club today who have said it was a poor move for him careerwise and have agreed with my albeit admittedly underqualified opinion and were rather perplexed that he should make a poor career move like this.

We can believe what we want - this may have been a better move than waiting to shine more in the UK and being snapped up by a better team, or it may have been better to eye the Prem. No one position is obviously right and if pros can't decide, I certainly can't. But the fact is it's questionable and everyone will have their equally valid opinion.

FWIW I side with people far more knowledgeable than myself and folk on here: he'd be better off eyeing a Prem move than jumping ship so soon.

Well for a start, I don't think I was addressing you in my previous message, unless you're also Sandman. But regardless, you miss my point regarding 'Wigan' - it was a far more flippant comment than you seem to have realized. No bother though.
As for your 'pro' friends, your username is enough to tell me you probably won't approach a comparison of the Bundesliga and Premier League with an open mind, moreover you probably wouldn't choose to associate with anyone who would. Your loss.
