windermereROYALroyals6719Jackson Corner Reading have only once lost at home to a non league club. I was at that game possibly one of the most depressing miserable experiences l can remember as a Reading fan. Anyone else on this board remember it?
Bishops Stortford 1-2!!! in the mud. Remember it well -
Yes a horrible experience, we were losing for a long time when Steve Moran volleyed a superb equaliser only for a late goal keeping mistake let them in for a late winner.

Royals and RacersClyde1998 Looks like slow ticket sales thus so (shock!): 1,562 home tickets sold based on the seat map (not counting disabled or hospitality).
Carlisle appear to have sold 536 out of their 559 allocation so far.
Any chance Clyde of an update- new manager ticket sale surge ?

Pretty sure Maurice Evans was manager so before Steve Moran's time? may be wrong though, memory not what it was.
I do remember we lost to a last minute goal though.

Crowbar6753 Pat Earles was the scorer in the Bishop Stortford cup defeat in the mud! 2931 in attendance.
Reading team: Fearon, Williams, White, Beavon, Hicks, Wood, Bason, Stant, Dixon, Doherty, Donnellan. I remember the game and the squad well but for some reason i cannot remember the guy called Bason? Anyone enlighten me on this guy?

According to my copy of "Biscuits and Royals", Brian Bason was here 1882-83, made 41 appearances no goals. I don't remember him, either

I’m not surprised no-one remembers him, 1882 was a helluva long time ago.

This was a pretty bang average to poor Reading side from what i remember. Beavon was ok and surprised Dixon didn't bang a goal in against a non league team! I think Phil Stant was an Army player if memory serves me right and Doherty and Donnellan weren't much! Martin Hick's was a legend, all legs and like bambie on ice, a stereotypical div 4 center backI guess these were the dark days a few years before things slowly took off
where was Gilksy?????

Wasn't this just before the merger attempt by Maxwell later that season?
Donnellan was a winger signed from Watford, Doherty was playing in Local football in Reading when we signed him.

Oops. Either he was a very early player or maybe it was 1982-83

1982-83
Brian Bason was a midfielder previously with Palace and Chelsea. Retired after leaving Reading and went off to run a Cornish pub I think.
Maurice was manager while Phil Stant was bought out of the army by the club but never fulfilled his potential, instead moving on after a handful of games to score shedloads at Hereford and then Cardiff.
Think Gary Donnellan was more famous at Reading for his return with Wealdstone in the cup in about 1985 when their tactics seemed to involve various elements of on pitch thuggery - probably unsurprising given Vinnie Jones was also playing for them.
Mike Doherty was a striker, came from Basingstoke in 1982 and was then moved on to Slough in 1983. Managed 5 league goals in his time here.

Do people think we have a stronger team now that when the Americans took over?
At the time we were not getting thrashed and in a relegation fight just above the relegation zone I think?
If this is the case we should be able to beat Reading if we play their strongest team against our strongest.

Assume you got that from his wiki page which is pretty vague, his time at Basingstoke has a question Mark there.
Do remember he was born in Liverpool but played in non league football in and around Reading, he may of been at Basingstoke when we did sign him, can't remember that bit. Do remember him more as a midfielder and don't think he signed a professional contract with us. Definitely a near the end of Wallers' time as chairman, we were struggling with some really low attendances that season.
