MATCHWATCH : Huddersfield Town (h)

by Sutekh » 05 Aug 2025 10:47

When : Saturday August 9, 12.30pm
Where : SCL Stadium, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24,161

The first televised Saturday lunch time home game of Reading’s fixtures this season, just as this fixture was last season.

Already deep in the relegation mire, Reading's struggle could be assuaged somewhat by collecting 3 points from one of the favourites for automatic promotion but it will be a hard difficult battle against a side yet to concede a goal let alone drop a point.

The Terriers have basically tried to dispense with their team from last year with 7 players exiting and, so far, 12 players incoming, including Alfie May from Charlton and 3 loans from the premier league (Josh Feeney, Leo Castledine and Owen Goodman).

The opening day saw Lee Grant's men easily demolish Leyton Orient 3-0 to push them to the top of the table and get their promotion charge off to a belter so, hopefully, they'll underestimate a Reading team struggling to offer any real threat, therefore it's up to Noel to get the players back into the "up against it" mentality that seemed to serve them well for most of last season.

O'Connor is rated as only 50-50 for the game and Tuma is out for 8 weeks, believe otherwise it's a fairly full strength squad and hopefully Doyle and Lane will be granted starts rather than being assigned bench duty (but then bench duty would mean something to lift the crowd in the 2nd half, especially against what should be tiring opposition).

Referee

Matt Corlett

Previously

03 Oct 23 > Northampton Town 3-1 Reading

Historically

The first time Reading played Huddersfield was at Elm Park in October 1975, since then then there have been another 26 home league games and, overall, Reading have the edge by 14 wins to 5 and have scored 44 to the Terrier’s 30. Recently though it’s been pretty poor for Reading with just 3 wins from the last 9 home league games.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and go
  2. NOW app/Sky red button thing
  3. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  4. Ring/text a mate for updates
  5. Use a RoyalsTV subscription
  6. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Huddersfield started strong against Orient and we've got a lot of players to build an understanding... so I think this looks like a defeat. But not too worried by that. More interested in the performance.

......................Pereira
Abrefa, Stickland, Burns, Dorsett
........................Wing
................Elliott, Savage
Lane,................................... Kelvin
..................O'Mahoney

Subs: Stevens, Jacob, Ahmed, Fraser, Doyle, Kyerewaa, Camara

One would suggest that the Hudds players are still developing an understanding too, so could be quite an even game.

I think beating Orient 3-0 suggests they may have already sorted that

Depends how much of a mess Orient were. One game this early is basically not enough to know whether any side is the ‘finished article’ so this game is an unknown quantity.

And you call me a doomonger.
I haven't even voted either and it looks like hardly anyone is backing us.....
For the record I'm going for the draw.

Predicting one defeat is hardly doom Spizz. Particularly when saying that isn't worrying.

The Udders were a car crash at the end of last season, they must have strengthened significantly to be among the favourites to go up this term.

Going to be a difficult game for us, especially if Noel persists with the high line which failed badly at the weekend. I’d bring Jacob in at left back, thought both full backs were very poor last game, and would start Doyle and Lane as we need attacking threat to take the pressure off the rest of the team as the ball just comes back constantly. Still looking for a decent striker to come in, MOM isn’t it from what I’ve seen so far, but with decent service that could change.

Abrefa was outstanding. Dorsett was ok and Jacob was appalling against Pompey.

“Abrefa outstanding” Lololol. The whole team were hopeless against Pompey, including Abrefa. Also looked on the Huddersfield forum and a Lincoln poster also suggested both fullbacks were dogsh#t and that Huddersfield’s wingers would have a great time against them.

I don't care what some random Lincoln troll says on a Huddersfield forum. I watched the game and Abrefa was excellent. And you only have to read the Lincoln thread on here to see that was the consensus.

Defensively he was excellent. His distribution was the only thing that let him down.

Each to his own, and luckily some of us let others have opinions.

Abrefa (and Elliott) were our best players against Lincoln. Some of Abrefa's distribution wasn't great, but he had a very decent game. Dorsett wasn't brilliant, and TBH Jacob's 15 minute cameo wasn't overly convincing. Very early, of course, but not sure our left-back issues have been fully resolved. Certainly not writing anyone off yet though mind.

Not stopping you having an opinion, just expressing my opinion that it's wrong and a minority view. And rather shocking.

We can’t justify bringing anyone else in - between Jacob, Dorsett, Ryan, Garcia (and Clarke later in the year), one of them will have to step up

Hopefuly one will. But adequate across the 5 + Yids is ok and then a big trim down end of season
