Worst record ever - OFFICIAL

by Fox Talbot » 20 May 2013 09:28

... since 1894 when we started playing football on a league basis.

2012-13 average points per game = 0.737.

Re-calculating our historical record on 3 pts for a win basis:

Previous worse 1909-10 = 0.738 (Southern League); 0.913 in 1997-98 (Last season at EP)

Consolations:
- on 2 points for a win basis 1909-10 was marginally worse
- third highest ever finish in the national league structure = 19th
- only 6 league wins is a new club record for us
- at least we didn't finish bottom - unlike 1910 and 1998

You cannot compare the season just gone to poor seasons far lower divisions.

Why not flip it on it's head and say we have just finished the third highest we have ever finished in our entire history?

You do have to take league position into account otherwise it's a pretty meaningless stat.
That team in the Championship would at least have averaged 1.2 points per game. Comfortably not the worst.

Arguably finishing so poorly in 1909-1910 as a non-league team qualifies as the worst.

The strange thing is that this turd of a season was technically our third best ever!

So the third best season ever ends with the worst record ever.

Technically it's the third highest finish ever, but...whatever league you enter, you prepare a team to compete. If we were going into a League 2 campaign we'd assemble a team that would be able to play at that level. Ditto League 1 and the Championship, you bring in players capable of competing in that division. The fact that Reading completely failed in that regard this season, resulting in such an appalling record, means that this was the most poorly prepared team in our history. That's just a fact.

Without going into the PPG stuff, 28 points is however the lowest points tally we have ever had in a professional league. The first time we've ever brought in less than 30.

- 1930/31 we got 30 in the English second division was the old record.

1997/98 remains the only season where we have ever finished bottom of a league [with 42 points].

No factors for number of games played?

Too much effort to work that out. I'm not a statto, not going to pretend to be one.

It WAS professional in 1909-10 - we got 25 points only. Three years later we were beating the Italian national team, so a lot can change!

TBF to me I did say worst record, not worst season BTW, and acknowledged 3rd highest ever finish in the OP.
