Jay o/ I don't know what to make of this. Taylor wants first team but wont get that with Federici here. Then you also have to ask what about McCarthy and also Mikkel Andersen? Both off out on loan? Nothing about this makes much sense unless we are resigned to losing Federici.

Premier League clubs are expected to have enough keepers to cover injuries - no emergency loans except in exceptional circumstances, so we need at least 3 keepers who are not on loan.

3 Keepers sounds right, but only 2 of them are expected to really be any good. The 3rd always seems to be very young. I'd be happy to send one on loan with cover from the youths. And there's always the chance of a recall clause in the loan deal.

McCarthy and Andersen both need to be playing regular first team football this season, I think this is actually quite a likely move, would make a lot of sense. He is a good keeper who a bit like Steve Harper just has not played enough first team games over his career. When he has played he's looked quite decent.

Unless I mis-heard, Brian confirmed that he's been training with us, and suggested he might play 45 minutes against Wimbledon...

Andersen likely to be loaned, not sure where that leaves McCarthy though...?

What a sad career Taylor has had - just 68 or so appearances in 13 years. He just aways seems to have been in the wrong place and been third choice at each club he has been at. It won't be any different here but he must be used to being a reserve by now and if it lets Andersen out on loan I am all for it.

Maybe so we can loan at least one out and will therefore be playing games, as opposed to not even sitting on the bench?

Personally feel we will loan out both Andersen and McCarthy for a season (with recall clauses), and have Jon Henly as third choice, he seems very highly rated and wouldn't count in the 25 player squad.

Ups and Downs
blueroyals Interesting that we've not signed a goalkeeper (for the first team) for 6 years.

Who was that? Feds?

Graham Stack, Feds was signed a year later but that was for the youth team/reserves

Ironically Stack and Taylor were very much the McCarthy and Andersen of Arsenal in their younger days. Hopefully our next goalkeeper signing won't continue the trend!

Played half an hour or so on Saturday. Due to the ineptitude of Wimbledon's second half team he wasn't really tested, assume they will take Taylor to Portugal?

Taylor didn't make the 28 man squad due to depart for Portugal later today. Academy 'keeper Jonathan Henly will support Feds, McCarthy and Andersen but will probably play a limited part. Perhaps Taylor will be given game time with the development squad, but it appears he will not be offered a contract. I'd be glad that we give McCarthy and/or Andersen a chance should it arise.

Sky Sports suggests that we are going to offer him a contract:

http://www1.skysports.com/football/news ... ading-deal

This one clearly only makes sense if Anderson and / or McCarthy go out on loan. Seems a bit odd that they didn't conclude a deal before the Portugal trip though if we are keen to sign him on...

Perhaps leaving him at home to train with the development squad is for the best. If he is offered a deal I would expect him to only be used in a emergency due to injury/suspension of the two first choice 'keepers and Andersen being out on loan. He would provide excellent experience to the reserve side and has the pedigree to aid the development of the up and coming academy 'keepers.

If he's cheap then sign him up. Would do no harm to the squad at all and will only improve it.
