Brendan outlines selection policy
Posted on: Thu 01 Oct 2009
Brendan Rodgers is pleased to be approaching a more settled squad, and he believes that as he trims down the edges of his playing staff it will continue to have a positive influence on the consistency of the team's performances.

The boss commented, "I've already said this week that once we got consistency in our squad, and I am looking to trim down the squad, that will help us.

"Look at Preston, up until this week they only had three players who played every game and I don't think people will be asking Alan about that. When I came in we lost some big players so I am finding out what I have got. I can only do that by playing players, and I've mixed young and experienced players, which can take bravery.

"Sometimes you take stick for that but we are going forwards. You have to give players the opportunity to show what they have got."

In the last two games Brendan has left out a striker who scored in their previous match - but on both occasions it proved the right decision because the player who came in found the back of the net.

He explained, "Grzegorz played against Watford because they had a small back four so aerially I felt he could dominate and it's his old team so he would want to score - which he did. Then he struggles to play two games in a week and Tuesday was a different game.

"For Preston, with our 4-3-3 we had to pass the ball and keep the ball. We have to be able to join in quickly, and with pace. Simon Church is a full international and that was the idea of putting him in.

"His movement is one of the best in the league and you can see his finishing too. He scored on his last game at Peterborough and again on Tuesday."

I like this - shows he's always thinking about how he wants to set the team up, he knows he needs to get some more consistency with regards to team selection but also realises you have to have a plan B unlike his predecessor.

agree totally

then you throw in the daft last three words

i dont know what you were watching, but i saw coppell use all sorts of formations, and tactics
and so far have pretty much seen 4-3-3 from rodgers

how is that squared in your tiny mind?

I didn't mean it as a dig at Coppell this time - we just haven't seen it from previous managers. I include Pardew in that as although we went 4-5-1, that was very much down to Forster and the players we had rather than trying to out-think the opposition and so forth.

I think Royalee will have "unlike his predecessor" engraved on his tombstone.

Interesting that Rodgers says Rasiak struggles to play twice in a week. That's a bit of a handicap in this division.

The best statement that Rodgers has made so far.

No hyperbole, no rash promises, no bigging himself up.

Perhaps he's learning to be patient. Can only be a good thing.

Is that how you picked the results in the 'Next 6 games' thread Schards?

If Brenda had 49 to pick from we would be playing in League 1 next year.

I understand what he's saying, and there's nothing wrong with that to a point. But you simply can't just juggle bits and pieces every week and you can't expect a player to show you what he can do it one outing.

I think we'll see a much more coherant strategy from here on in, but he has still made ample mistakes so far.

Picking the team specifically for that oppostion is a good idea, but consistency of practice and partnerships is equally key. I don't think he's quite found the balance between them yet. Maybe in the last game. Subs could still use a little work, and I'd like to see Siggy firmly in place as our attacking and linking midfielder.

Please no more diamond nonsense.

Good thinking from Brendan, on the whole. Not convinced by him yet, but he out-thought the combined brains of the legendary think tank known as the HobNob board by playing Kebe and replacing Rasiak with Church: both scored!

The only bit i don't like is where he says that Rasiak would want to score against his old club. Surely he would want to score against any team.

It doesn't take much to realise it means he'd want to score more against his old club.

I am getting to the stage where I don't give a stuff what the line up or formation is as I would be much happier if we could actually witness a second half performance. With the exception of Barnsley away, how many second halves have we actually dominated?
