BR2 This is a message board mate where occasionally we can escape from the PC Police so if you don't like the heat get out of the kitchen rather than waiting for the Health & Safety officer to turn up.
BTW my dad had bouts of malaria for many years after the War (2nd World war for pedants who don't realise that if people refer to the War they are generally referring to that one)and it meant a few days in bed with the sweats.
If Fae ends up in bed will that be the first time he has broken sweat since signing for Reading?
Another cheap shot?
What is the world coming to?

Thaumagurist* Agreed. I looked at the official site and realised that this thread was no joke. Get well Fae, hope you come back and prove some of your doubters wrong.

I read the first few posts and realised it wasn't a joke. You however I'm not sure about.

Seeing as how malaria is very prevalent in Ghana (3.5 million cases a year) and, indeed, in West Africa as a whole, and added to which Fae is really a Frenchman playing for his grandparents country and as such wouldn't have any natural immunity that Africans might have, I would have though that the club would have ensured that he took the necessary medication to prevent the disease.

If the club left it up to the player, well boo to them, and boo to Fae for not doing it himself.

That said, I hope he gets better soon.

the only problem being the side-effects of that medicine probably being too severe for the club/player to think the risk worth taking - and besides the medicines aren't 100% effective. it's jsut one of those things really, as you say, millions of people get it every year.

I would suggest the the much published side effects of taking anti Malaria drugs such as Lariam (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/1330996.stm) is enough of a deterrent that many people would rather take the risk of Malaria - which is at least cureable. Certainly when I was in the Amazon a few years ago I was advised against taking anti malaria drugs.

Am I not right in thinking that Malaria has many strains and that even taking an anti malaria drug doesn't guarantee you won't catch a new strain?

Fae was on the bench for the Boro game, Sonko who had travelled up with the squad in a show of good team spirit replaced him at the last moment, damned unlucky for the fella who had obviously done enough in SC's eye's to warrant a place on the bench.

Get well soon.

nope, and I don't take any of the drugs. I'm (relatively) careful about not getting bitten, which would've been hard for Fae in truth, and I keep an eye on my health for a couple of weeks after getting abck, although they do say it can strike some weeks after you return.

true, TROLI

SFers - yeah normally a case of covering your arms and using lots of spray. for a professional footballer doing a lot of training at dusk though it's probably a bit harder

Larium isn't the only malaria drug he could have used. For Ghana there's a choice of three including Doxycycline's and another recently developed one which has minimum risk of side effects (slightly dodgy stomach at worst). I'm sure Fae would have been taking something which makes it strange and a bit unlucky he's been affected. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery.

It was alluding to vision's post linking Ideal's dad to the SS and then Ideal's rather wimpish response.
You no doubt are in the same wimp club as Ideal.

Obviously I hope he gets over it quick, but it amazes me that a professional athelete going to play in a professional football tournament can contract such a disease. You would of thought the best preventitive measures would of been applied, bearing in mind the money in football at the moment.
