Some slightly obscure questions !

by Behindu » 24 May 2007 10:22

I don;t have access to me various RFC books so apologies if the answers are in there...

But does anyone know

1. Approximately how many games RFC have played in their history

2. Approximately how many different players have played for us

And on a different tangent can you think of any songs sung about individual players back in the 60's / 70's / 80's. The earliest i can think of was probably Ollie Kearns (Shot, missed, must be Oxford pissed) and Trevor Senior. Can anyone recall songs for Robin Friday, Steve Death or anyone else from way back in history...

Doesn't help much but we had played 3352 league games up to the end of 01/02.

We've got Gordon Gordon Cumming on the wing,
On the wing
We've got Gordon Gordon Cumming on the wing,
On the wing
Gordon, Gordon Cumming, Gordon Cumming on the wing;
(change to minor key:)
Gordon, Gordon Cumming, Gordon Cumming on the wing

Yes, they were as bland as that

I don't know how many players, but all the stats you could want about the number of games can be found at
http://www.rob-andrews.demon.co.uk/royals/

Total in Football league & Premiership 1920 - 2007 = 3574 (excluding play-offs)

Total including Southern League 1894 - 1920 = 4266

Total in all major competitions = 4853. This inlcudes Football League, Premiership, Southern League, FA Cup, League Cup, Associate Members Cupm Div 3 South Cup, FA Amateur Cup, Full Members Cup, Play-offs, Southern Floodlit Cup and Watney Cup.

Short of counting the number of entries in the A-Z of Reading players 1920-2001 then augmenting it with all the players we've signed since 2001 (I'm sure someone's going to be sad enough to do it) I would guesstimate at around 800 players have played at least some part of a first team game for us since 1920.

Excluding friendlies, non-playing subs, Southern League and Western League, but including subs, Assoc. Mem comps and FAC back to about 1910, the figure for Q2 is 811 up to the end of this season.

In the South Bank to the tune of the '1-0' song that fans sing when their team goes 1-0 up and they say 1-0 over and over again, we used to sing 'Robin...Robin...Robin..."
