Reading are on course for relegation to the Championship after defeat in their vital relegation clash to Aston Villa this weekend. After already losing at home to relegation rivals Wigan, the Royals simply had to beat Villa at the Madejski Stadium to have any realistic chance to stay up. The 1-2 home defeat sees Villa move four points clear of Reading and puts Villa one place above the drop zone. The Premier League's bottom side QPR made it two straight wins to move equal with Reading at the bottom of the table matching both the Royals points total and goal difference. With games against Manchester United and Arsenal on the schedule Reading look set to be cut adrift at the very foot of the table over the coming weeks as the season reaches it's final stages.
It was do or die for Reading and they were killed off by a series of major mistakes against a Villa side that deserved their victory. Reading moved ahead thanks to an own goal but only managed to hold their lead for less than two minutes. Villa followed up their equaliser with a second goal before half time. The second half came and went as Reading struggled to turn the game around.
