I can't find it but I wonder what the record amount of points in any of the top divisions is for not winning the league ( I'm sure Liverpool have that from a few years ago) and most without getting promoted

Since the introduction of 3 points for a win in 1981:

In tier 1 Liverpool managed 97 points in 2019 but still lost out to Man C by 1 point. Liverpool only lost 1 league game over the course of the season compared to City’s 4 defeats so their problem was failing to convert one of their 7 draws into a win (or their 1 defeat into something else).

Luton (2001-02) also amassed 97 points and didn’t win the league (lost out to Plymouth by 5 points) it was in tier 4 though so they still got promoted.

The “most points managed over a season in failing to be promoted” record belongs to both Sheffield United (2011-12) in tier 3 and Sunderland (1997-98) in tier 2. Both teams clocked up 90 points but lost in the playoffs to Huddersfield and Charlton respectively.

Honourable mentions also to Port Vale, Portsmouth and Brighton who have all racked up 89 points while failing to be promoted.

90 points and 89 points is utterly brutal.

looking at fixtures I am tempted to think Sunderland will draw and the other 2 will win which mean Sunderland finish 7th. tasty

Looking at League 2, with 2 sets of fixtures left, it's possible that the team in 8th could still be in with a shout of automatic promotion on the last day. Salford and Tranmere with an outside shout of the playoffs but given the fixtures, I think the gap is too big.

1 Forest Green +33 83pts
2 Exeter +25 83pts
3 Northampton +20 76pts
4 Port Vale +21 75pts
5 Mansfield +15 75pts
6 Bristol Rovers +14 74pts
7 Sutton United +17 73pts
8 Swindon +19 71pts

Forest Green - Harrogate (19th H), Mansfield (5th A)

Exeter - Northampton (3rd A), Port Vale (4th H)

Northampton- Exeter (2nd H), Barrow (21st A)

Port Vale - Newport (11th H), Exeter (2nd A)

Mansfield - Salford (9th A), Forest Green (1st H)

Bristol Rovers - Rochdale (18th A) , Scunthorpe (H 24th)

Sutton - Bradford (16th H), Harrogate (19th A)

Swindon - Barrow (21st H), Walsall (14th A)

I fancy Bristol Rovers to sneak 3rd.

What a player Scott Twine is. Would think he will be playing Championship football next season regardless of if MK Dons go up or not.

Enjoying this Rotherham game where one is currently going up and one down. I am feeling anxious just watching

1 goal for Gillingham and they jump out the relegation zone and Rotherham drop into the play offs

Their run in was crazily difficult tbf. I think it was more about how the fixtures fell for them

That Rotherham goal was what it's all about. 89th minute, sends your team up, relegates someone else, shirt off, fans on the pitch. Lovely, lovely stuff.

Extremely dangerous behaviour from the Rotherham supporters. They should be banned from being promoted.

Yes I'm clutching at straws here but we need some reason for them to not stink up the Championship next season.

I think there might actually be more Rotherham supporters inside the ground. My money is on them.

Hopefully we hear the words 'scenes nobody wants to see'

Dropping out of the playoffs on the final game with a 5-0 home defeat. Absolutely gutting

Really want them back in the champ
